Major shed roof repairs at Grade 2 listed Scarborough Train Station

In preparation for major train shed roof repairs at Grade 2 listed Scarborough Station, J Gunn Scaffolding are working with Colt Construction who are in partnership with Network Rail.

J Gunn Scaffolding have erected a 2500m2 scaffold crash deck. The scaffolding has a 60-minute fire rating with mechanical ventilation and natural ventilation for train exhausts requiring complex fire modelling system.

The station remained open at all times during the erection of the scaffolding and has been designed to avoid any disruption to the public, safe operation of trains and access and egress to the station including maintaining Fire Escapes at all times.

Upon detailed examination of the victorian made platforms significant voids were present and these received mass pour concrete, in addition to the loose made ground conditions, which required a strengthening solution that could provide ground support for a load of 100kN/m2 to 36 scaffold towers before work could begin.

PROJECT DETAILS

J Gunn Scaffolding have been working in Partnership with Colt Construction / NWR for over 5 years.

We were asked to provide Safe Access and Egress to various sites within the UK. This was due to the high demand of Network Rail doing various construction, maintenance and refurbishments on Train Stations, Signal Boxes etc.

We have had great success working in Partnership with Colt Construction/NWR by having the consistency of work within the UK.

J Gunn Scaffolding were asked to provide Safe Access and Egress for a wall repair to Hebden Bridge Train Station.

A site visit was set up between Colt Construction, J Gunn Scaffolding (JGS) and Rob Vint Engineering (RVE) to understand the complexity of the scaffolding build and weights needed to undertake the dismantling of the wall. The wall is part of the original structure that had to be repaired and made safe as passages and pedestrians used the wall way at the bottom of the station.

Corinthia Ltd, a specialised company that work with listed buildings were also used in the dismantling and rebuilding of the wall.

J Gunn Scaffolding were asked to provide a Safe Roof Access and Dance Floor for the old roof that would need to be removed whilst allowing the constant flow of passengers through the Train Station. A site visit was set up between Colt Construction, Network Rail, J Gunn Scaffolding (JGS) and RV Engineering (RVE) to understand the complexity of the scaffolding build as the scaffolding would have to be designed because Leeds Train Station is build up on arch ways under the station floor. RV Engineering a specialised Design company had the task of working our all the calculations of loading that needed to be spread across arch ways under the train Station.
